The Downsizing Checklist for Seniors Moving to the Myrtle Beach Area

The hardest part of moving into senior living isn't choosing the community — it's deciding what to do with 30 or 40 years of belongings. Here's the checklist we share with families relocating to Garden Manor Village in Murrells Inlet from larger homes across the Carolinas, Northeast, and Midwest.

90 days out: measure, plan, decide

• Get the floor plan of your new apartment and measure key furniture
• Pick the rooms you actually use today — those tell you what to keep
• Have a family conversation about heirlooms before you start sorting
• Book a realtor and an estate-sale company; both fill up in spring

60 days out: sort, don't pack

Resist the urge to box everything up. Sort first into four categories: keep, gift, sell, donate. Most clients are surprised that the "keep" pile is half what they expected once they see actual apartment dimensions.

30 days out: paperwork and address changes

• Update your address with USPS, Medicare, SSA, banks, and insurers
• Transfer prescriptions to a pharmacy near Murrells Inlet
• Notify your primary care doctor — or pick a new one in Georgetown County
• Schedule movers for a weekday; weekend rates are higher

Move week

Pack a first-night box: medications, phone charger, coffee setup, bedding, a change of clothes, and important documents. Everything else can wait until morning.

After you arrive

Give yourself two weeks before judging the new lifestyle. The first few days are about boxes; the magic of community living starts once you stop unpacking and start showing up at meals and activities.
